Bamboo Construction Poles in Nigeria - What Contractors Need to Know Before They Buy.
If you have been on a construction site in Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, or anywhere across the Southwest in the last two years, you have almost certainly seen bamboo scaffolding. What you may not have noticed is that the poles holding up that scaffolding probably came from an informal market, untreated, ungraded, and sized inconsistently. This article explains what the difference is between informal bamboo and treated, graded construction poles, why it matters for structural safety and project cost, and what Nigerian contractors should actually look for before placing a bamboo order.
Why Nigerian Contractors Are Switching to Bamboo Scaffolding.
The economics are straightforward. Cement prices in Nigeria rose from approximately ₦3,300 to over ₦10,000 per 50kg bag between 2021 and 2025. Metal scaffolding costs ₦15,000–₦35,000 per unit to purchase. A treated Grade A bamboo construction pole costs ₦950–₦1,800 and for most scaffolding applications, it does the same structural job. A Guardian Nigeria survey published in December 2025 found that 81% of construction site managers in Lagos and Ogun had already substituted bamboo for metal scaffolding on at least one project in the previous 12 months. This is not a trend. It is an economic decision being made by people who are responsible for building within budget.
The Difference Between Informal Market Bamboo and Treated Construction Poles
The bamboo you buy at Sango-Otta market or from a roadside trader and the bamboo BabaBamboo
Africa supplies are not the same product. The differences matter:
- Treatment: Untreated bamboo lasts approximately one year outdoors before degrading. Borax boric acid treated bamboo lasts 10–25 years. If your scaffolding pole fails mid-project, the cost of the incident, labour stoppage, injury risk, replacement material far exceeds the price difference between treated and untreated.
- Grading: Informal bamboo has no diameter consistency. Grade A construction poles from BabaBamboo are consistently 8–12cm diameter, 6 metres in length. When poles are consistent, they are easier to work with, load calculations are predictable, and the scaffolding structure is uniform.
- Documentation: For any green-certified project, government contract, or formal architect specification, you need documented bamboo. BabaBamboo provides product data sheets, treatment certification, and NBRRI compliance documentation on request. An informal market trader cannot.
What the NBRRI Mandate Means for Nigerian Contractors.
In June 2025, Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology formally endorsed bamboo as a climate-smart material for affordable housing construction. The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) is now the institutional credentialing body for bamboo in Nigerian construction. This means two things for contractors: first, bamboo specification in
government housing projects is now formally supported, opening procurement channels that were previously closed; second, being able to demonstrate NBRRI-aligned bamboo supply is increasingly relevant for any project with government, development bank, or NGO involvement.
